Haiti - Environment : 499 earthquakes in Haiti in 2020
The month of December 2020 was marked by 27 earthquakes of low magnitudes between 1.4 and 3.7 on the Richter scale over the whole of the national territory, according to the monthly report based on the events recorded by the networks national and regional seismological (Ayiti-earthquakes, UTS-BME, RD-OSPL-Loyola).
The 3 departments most affected by the earthquakes in December are:
West: 9 earthquakes (33.3%);
North-West: 6 earthquakes (22.2%);
South-East: 5 earthquakes (18.5%);
That is a total of 20 earthquakes out of 27 for the three departments, which represents nearly 74% of the earthquakes recorded for the month.
Note that nearly a dozen earthquakes (44.4%) occurred at sea, which presented a tsunami risk if the conditions had been met;
The earthquakes of December occurred, for the most part at depths varying between 0 and 25 km, therefore shallow earthquakes;
During the year 2020, the seismological monitoring networks recorded 499 earthquakes of low magnitude throughout the national territory, of which 168 (33.7%) occurred in the North-West department and 130 (26%), in the South-East department.
