Haiti - Education : Sophia Martelly and the role of Universities in societal issues

Mrs Sophia Martelly, the First Lady of the Republic of Haiti, had attended the presentation of research work of students graduating from the fourth year of the School of Nursing (École des Sciences Infirmières - ESI) of the University of Notre Dame d'Haiti (UNDH). A group of five students from the ESI-UNDH, supported their dissertation research on the topic : "The health conditions of prisoners in the National Penitentiary after the earthquake of January 12, 2010."

These students are : Eveline Coquillon, Nadège Célius, Chedelyne Jean-Baptiste, Marie Christelle Jean-Louis et Marlène Fortuné.

These five students have achieved an overall mark of 98 out of 100 with mention "excellent".

The First Lady appreciated the fact that many problems and possible solutions were identified by these students, who wish to see their recommendations considered by the government structures concerned.

The First Lady, who believes necessary to continue to engage in social has stressed the importance of the University in societal issues. "This space of research, investigations and knowledge is a reservoir of thoughts and reflections for all countries, to achieve the desired change, Haiti will have to benefit from them."
