Haiti - Cholera : A partial assessment that hides the reality...

The World Health Organization (WHO), has announced yesterday in a press conference that from May 2 to June 12, 2011 there had been 18.182 new cases of cholera in Port-au-Prince. According to Tarik Jasarevic, the spokesman of the WHO, this increase this increase would be the consequence of the rainy season and floods that hit the capital since May 2011. He indicated that there was an increase in cholera cases in some regions of Haiti, particularly in the neighborhood of Port-au-Prince and the south.

However, this latest report of WHO, is careful to give the situation throughout the country, undoubtedly to avoid exposing a more dramatic situation to the people... Indeed, if we refer to the reports of the Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP), for the period mentioned by the WHO, the number of new cases of cholera, increased by 51.526 [including the capital]. Worse, if we look at the numbers of MSPP dated June 20, [latest available], the number of new cases from 2 May to 20 June 2011 [50 days], amounts to 70.020 24% more than the total number of cases recorded since the beginning of the epidemic !

The WHO who wants to be "reassuring", explained that the trend [upward] does not seem to be confirmed in Port-au-Prince, adding that the last two weeks [before June 12] "We started to see a decline in new cases in the metropolitan area..." It is precisely these two weeks, that the Director General of the MSPP take in reference, to assert that the cholera cases are decreasing in the metropolitan area due to steps taken by his Ministry... https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-3138-haiti-cholera-the-mspp-is-not-saying-the-whole-truth-to-the-people.html However, between June 12 and June 20, 2011 [9 days], we find in reading the figures published by the MSPP, that 18.494 new cases are added to the national level ! What is far from being a decrease, although there is no indication for say that this is an upward trend.

If they continue to believe, to the people that the situation "is improving" it may contribute to a resurgence of the epidemic, in fact, the people, by ignorance of the true situation, will reduce its vigilance and basic hygiene measures necessary to fight against this epidemic.

Whatever the reasons for this alarming increase of the epidemic or the difficulties to controlling it, it is necessary to stop to misinform the Haitian people under the pretext of avoiding a panic effect. The Haitian people have the right to know the truth in its entirety,

that the news are good or bad.
