Haiti - Climate : Martelly prepares to face the hurricane season
Today, Michel Martelly, the President of the Republic, met at the National Palace officials of the Directorate for Civil Protection (DPC). The DPC was represented, among others, by its director Mrs. Alta Jean-Baptiste and the Coordinator of the Emergency Response, Disaster Mitigation and Preparedness Project (PUGRD), Mme Yolène Suréna. It was for the Head of State to learn about the planning of the DPC and the structures put in place to protect the population at the approach of the hurricane season that begins this June 1st. The President has given clear instructions to the DPC in order to strengthen the lines of coordination between the institution and its various partners.

Representatives from some partners of the DPC, including Edgard Célestin of support program to the National System for Disaster and Risk Management (PASNGRD), and Ronald Semelfort of National Meteorological Center (CNM) also attended the meeting.

Wanting to stand out from the tendency which consists to limiting the "disaster" to the weather, the President Martelly has emphasized the need to make the system more efficient and better able to intervene in other cases including pandemics and other risks of loss of human lives.



During this meeting, the team of the DPC presented to the President of the Republi its national plan of management of the risks and disasters. It was an opportunity for the Presidency and the DPC to discuss about the preventive measures to be taken now and throughout the hurricane season. The President of the Republic intends to visit the emergency operation Center, accommodation facilities in the event of bad weather and to ensure of the citizen participation and a good coordination between the different partners.

The responsibility for disaster response is multisectoral and requires the support and collaboration of all sectors of national life.
