In a joint statement dated Wednesday, May 25, organizations of Civil Society and Human Rights express their concern about the scandalous and shameful treatment surrounding the publication of the amended text of the Haitian Constitution of 1987.

The signatories of this underlines that "Contrary to the Declaration of amendment modified and publicly voted by the National Assembly on the night of May 9, 2011, another constitutional amendment text riddled with errors, of contradictions and non-adopted provisions was published on the night of May 13 by the National Press just hours before the swearing in of new President of the Republic."

"This situation leaves us even more perplexed, that the text adopted, finalized by an Ad Hoc Committee, and initially signed by the six (6) members of the bureau of the National Assembly did not contain any errors found in that other document sent to the National Press and published in le Moniteur of May 13 2011 with only four (4) signatures of the Bureau."

These organizations are demanding the "explanations due to the nation so that full light be shed on this indescribable scandal in order to identify those responsible and take appropriate sanctions", while asking "to the Executive Power to ensure of the publication without delay of the authentic Constitutional text with the necessary corrections in the newspaper Le Moniteur concerned, reproduced to this purpose."

They also call "the Haitian people to the greatest vigilance in order to defend the democratic and republican gains of the Constitution of 1987 and to require the respect of the Constitution and of the amendments that have been made of it for the advancement of our country and a better integration of the Haitian diaspora."
