Haiti - Agriculture : 457,000 euros in aid for families victims of drought

Belgium has released 457,000 euros in favor of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to help vulnerable populations in Haiti, victims of a severe drought caused by the climatic phenomenon El Niño between 2018 and the first half of 2019.

In addition to this drought, socio-political tensions, insecurity, availability, limited access to food, declining incomes and rising food prices have exacerbated the vulnerability of the population, including 3.7 million people today live in severe acute food insecurity https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-29815-haiti-humanitarian-375-million-haitians-in-situation-of-serious-food-insecurity.html

Belgium has decided to help Haiti by providing 457,000 euros to the Special Fund for Emergency Activities to improve the livelihoods of 7,500 households, or 37,500 people.

To this end, FAO will distribute vegetable seeds, stump cuttings and tillage equipment. Beneficiaries will also receive training on nutritional education, market gardening techniques, the maintenance of forage plots but also on the conservation of fodder. The aim is to give financial and material resources to the victims of drought on the one hand and to train them in agricultural techniques on the other.

Through these trainings, FAO hopes in the future to guarantee the autonomy and resilience of these vulnerable populations. In the short and long term, the livelihoods of these populations should therefore improve significantly.
