Haiti - Education : Towards the improvement of the governance of the Evening and Family Education Centers

The Office of the Minister of National Education organized this week a working meeting to present the inventory of Evening Centers (Centres du Soir - CS) and Family Education Centers (Centres d’Éducation Familiale - CEF) and share the results of a study carried out on improving the governance of these centers.

Professor Reynold Telford, former Director General of the Ministry led the consultation to assess the capacities of the centers, with technical and financial support from the UNESCO office in Port-au-Prince. On this occasion, he presented the evaluation and a specification integrating the expectations of all the actors of these centers across the country.

According to Telford, the Evening Centers are like an extension of formal education with different audiences. Recalling that non-formal education aims to reduce the rate of juvenile delinquency, facilitate the integration of young people and promote continuous training.

He spoke about the lack of electricity in evening schools and the efforts of some schools that use solar panels to produce their own energy. He also insisted on the need to have a substantial endowment of Human Resource Centers and proposed to integrate the concept of "leadership" in the curriculum review process that the Department of Basic Education, initiated with technical support of UNESCO.

In addition, advisers to the Minister of National Education interacted on the issue of information and the mobilization of the various players to fuel the process leading to decision-making. The executives of the Ministry have agreed to prepare a circular asking the departmental directors to designate a focal point for each departmental direction to interact with the central office in the context of monitoring all that concerns the CS and CEF.

Non-formal education aims to reduce the rate of juvenile delinquency, facilitate the integration of young people and promote continuous training.
