At 3.32 am yesterday Saturday, an earthquake of 3.4 on the Richter scale was recorded 20 km west of Port-au-Prince.

The epicenter was located 20 km west of Port-au-Prince, more precisely between the comune of Léogâne and Carrefour, 5.6 km northwest of La Salle according to the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME). The earthquake was noticeable in the metropolitan area of ​​Port-au-Prince, Kenscoff and Pétion-ville.

The regional office of the Directorate of Civil Protection did not report any damage or loss of life.

According to the January 2020 seismic bulletin, based on the registration of national and regional seismological networks, 24 earthquakes of magnitudes between 1.4 and 3.5 on the Richter scale were recorded for the first month of the year on the whole of the national territory. The faults affected by these earthquakes are found mainly in the North and West of Haiti and occurred mainly in the sea (58.3%) and at depths varying between 8 and 96 km, considered as shallow earthquakes

The 3 departments most affected by these earthquakes are the North West with 7 earthquakes (29%); the North with 4 earthquakes (16.6%) and the West with 6 earthquakes (25%);

Note that the magnitude 7.7 earthquake that occurred on January 28, 2020 at 2:10 pm at 10 km deep with an epicenter located at sea between Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Cuba was located on the Oriente fault, eastward extension of Haiti's northern fault. The epicenter was located more than 500 km from the Haitian coast and was weakly felt in Haiti.
