Haiti - Politic : Michel Martelly satisfied with the U.S. response

The President Michel Martelly, in a press note, said he was pleased yesterday, to learn the Obama administration's decision to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians non-resident living in the U.S. before January 12, 2011.

The extension of TPS for our countrymen was one of the points discussed by the President Martelly with the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during his trip to Washington last April 20. This extension, which extends until January 22, 2013, will allow Haitian institutions to adequately prepare the return of these compatriots and already attests of the close collaboration of the two countries around major bilateral issues.

"I received a warm welcome from the Obama administration and the Congress of the United States during my visit to Washington, DC. The administration officials have been receptive to my request to extend the TPS for our Haitian brothers and sisters residing temporarily in the United States. With the support of Congress, we were able to get that Haitian nationals are able to continue to reside and work in the United States while our country is trying to recover. I am also very grateful for the efforts of leaders of the Haitian diaspora engaged in this struggle [...] My administration is committed to put Haiti on the path of economic development. We look forward to working with the Obama administration and the international community to revive the process of reconstruction of the country so we can welcome our fellow citizens and ensure their safety" precise the President Martelly in his note.

The President of the Republic presented his most sincere thanks to Mrs. Frederica Wilson, the representative of Broward County to the Congress, who, following her recent visit to Haiti, has strongly supported this issue.
