Haiti - Taiwan : Financial support for food self-sufficiency in Haiti

Thursday, December 26, as part of the Technical Cooperation between Taiwan (Republic of China) and Haiti, the Ambassador of Taiwan Bang-Zyh Liu accredited to Haiti, presented to Jobert C. Angrand with the Minister of Agriculture, 3 checks totaling nearly 2.3 million US dollars (2,283,000) representing the second tranche of funding for this year of the three regional sub-projects (Artibonite, South, North and Northeast Regions), of the "Project to Strengthen the National Production of Rice Seeds".

Let's clarify that these 3 sub-projects were designed and developed in order to concretize the strategic vision of President Moïse, aiming to increase rice production on the national territory, by an increase in the supply of rice seeds capable of satisfying current Haitian demand estimated at around 20,000 tonnes taking into account the needs of each region (5,000 tonnes in the North and Northeast region, 12,000 tonnes in Artibonite and 3,000 tonnes in the South region). To this end, each of these three regions will have a modern rice seed processing center in order to improve the efficiency of the production and distribution chain of these seeds.

Recall that the total provisional amount for the implementation of the "Project to Strengthen the National Production of Rice Seeds" signed in January 2019 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-26606-haiti-taiwan-$22-million-for-increased-rice-seed-production.html ($ 22,825,000 US):

  • $ 5.5 million for the execution of the project in the North and Northeast region;

  • 7.8 million for the execution of the project in Artibonite;

  • 6.56 million for the execution of the project in the South region;

  • 3 million for the creation of three modern rice seed treatment centers.

The Ambassador of Taiwan Bang-Zyh Liu took the opportunity to reaffirm the support of the Taiwanese Government to the Haitian Government for an effective implementation of these projects in view of the increase in national rice production that can contribute in the long term term to achieve food self-sufficiency in Haiti.
