Haiti - FLASH : Shipwreck off Île-à-Vache

Monday, December 23 in the afternoon, the sailboat "Le requin" which provides the Les Cayes / Île-à-Vache connection sank off off Île-à-Vache.

Coming from Les Cayes, the overloaded boat was carrying 32 passengers and a large quantity of goods, when it sank in the "Ti resif" area, 10 minutes after leaving Les Cayes.

The provisional assessment is of 23 surviving passengers including the captain, 2 dead and 7 missing. One of the passengers had to be hospitalized.

Still in shock, the captain of the boat Jean-Sony was unable to explain the circumstances of this sinking.

According to Commissioner Jacques Joël Orival, Departmental Director of the National Police of the South, search activities are continuing, rescuers from the Red Cross and the town hall are making dives in an attempt to find the missing passengers...
