Haiti - FLASH Crisis : Failure of the mediation to the apostolic nunciature

Wednesday at the initiative of Helen La Lime, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Haiti https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-29543-haiti-flash-at-the-diplomatic-headquarters-of-the-vatican-in-haiti-political-actors-dialogue.html was held the second day of discussion at the apostolic nunciature, official diplomatic seat of the Vatican, with leaders of political opposition parties and groups, representatives of Civil Society, local authorities, the presidency, Helen La Lime and representatives of the Organization of American States (OAS), far from microphones and cameras, in an attempt to find a consensual solution to end the crisis.

Note that for this second day Joseph Domingue Orgella, President of the Passerelle Initiatve Group was not present explaining that he was not a party to the Marriott agreement but that a facilitator and that he had no mandate to negotiate.

Rosemond Pradel, the representative of the “Maché kontre” grouping (OPL, MOCRHENAH, VERITE, VEYE YO, FUSION), of the Marriott agreement was also absent, saying that the discussions were not going in the right direction, recalling the position of the Marriott agreement which requires the resignation of the Head of State as a prerequisite.

At the end of this second day, the participants issued a joint statement.

Joint declaration :

"We, parties, political groups of the opposition, representatives of the presidency, civil society organizations and local authorities gathered at the nunciature on December 17 and 18, 2019, completed two days of reflections and exchanges around the political, social and economic crisis which has shaken the country for several months.

This is a positive step and a constructive approach which must continue in order to bring together all the representatives of society in order to resolve the crisis.

We take this opportunity to thank the Apostolic Nociature for its hospitality as well as the international actors who have accompanied this effort, notably the United Nations and the OAS.
