Haiti - Bahamas : 9 months in prison for exceeding the length of stay visitor

Judge Rengin Johnson of the Freeport Court of Grand Bahamas Island charged four Haitians with violating the immigration law. Briceler Phanor (29), aka "Raymon Odine", Astrel Fabre (39), aka "Gaby Mauvais", Guerby Metayer (29) aka "Guyemond Honore" and Eddy Metellus (28), aka "William Junior Joseph" arrested at Freeport during a check, while their visitor status in the archipelago had expired.

They were charged with being in excessive residence contrary to sections 28 (1) and (3) of the Immigration Act and misleading an immigration officer, contrary to paragraph 10 (e) of the Act by providing him false identities during interrogations.

They all pleaded guilty and were sentenced to pay a fine of US $ 3,000 each or to serve a nine-month prison term by default.

Judge Johnson also ordered that all defendants be deported to Haiti after payment of the fines or after serving their prison sentence.

Recall that since the passage of Hurricane Dorian, the Government of the Bahamas has decided to strictly enforce the immigration law and to expel from the archipelago all foreigners in irregular migration situation or without paper whatever their nationality https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-28906-haiti-flash-the-bahamas-ask-the-haitian-illegal-to-leave-the-archipelago-of-will-or-force.html . Recall that the Haitian community represents nearly 18% of the population of the archipelago and that more than 20,000 compatriots are in irregular migratory situation and risk deportation.
