Haiti - Tourism : Loss of nearly 60% of jobs in the tourism sector

Already affected by travel bans in Haiti issued by the United States, Canada and France, the number of tourists arriving by plane in Haiti has increased from 515,000 to 420,000 in 2018 (-18%) and according to Raina Forbin, President of the Tourism Association of Haiti (ATH) the number of visitors will decrease further in 2019, recalling that the air traffic had already been reduced by 30% and that in October the sector had reached the lowest level ever found in Haiti...

With the repeated demonstrations over the last few weeks that have virtually paralyzed all economic activities in the country, the situation in the tourism sector has worsened. Due to widespread insecurity, many employees in this sector are no longer able to travel to their workplace. "The situation is very worrying," acknowledged Forbin, who reveals that several member companies of the association, to reduce their loss, take drastic measures and many qualified employees find themselves overnight unemployed or are laid off.

Remember that the 5 star hotel "Best Western Premier" in Pétion-ville has announced its final closure on October 31st https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-29066-haiti-flash-the-5-stars-best-western-hotel-victim-of-the-crisis-announces-its-final-closure.html . ; the Royal Oasis Hotel has provisionally released some of its staff; in the South, almost all hotels are closed; on the Côte des Arcadins many layoffs and suspension of people for lack of customers....

Fortin estimates that jobs in this sector will be reduced by 50 to 60%.
