Haiti - Crisis : High tension in Léogâne

Thursday the city of Léogâne lived a day of high tension. Responding to the call of the opposition, to continue to demand the resignation of the Head of State, "violent" demonstrators and armed attacked ransacked, looted and partially burned several institutions including the Town Hall and the court of peace of jurisdiction.

They also attacked the police sub-station and burned at least 3 police vehicles parked at the entrance and on the courtyard of the police station. Police officers overwhelmed by the number, had to evacuate the premises, leaving individuals vandalize and try to burn the police station.

Agents of the Departmental Unit of Maintenance of the Order (UDMO) intervened in reinforcement, using tear gas and live ammunition to disperse the demonstrators and prevent the fire destroying all facilities. During this attack a protester was fatally shot.

Several sporadic shots of automatic weapons have been reported in several parts of the city...

The Radio Excellence Station, owned by Deputy Jean Wilson Hyppolite (pro-government) and Chairman of the majority bloc in the Lower House, was also partially set on fire...

Faced with this outburst of violence the police intervened each time, confronting the demonstrators under the stones and making a wide use of tear gas to disperse highly motivated individuals...
