Haiti - FLASH : Day of violence in the Senate

On Monday, for the second time, the four senators of the minority opposition managed to prevent the presentation of Prime Minister Fritz William Michel's General Policy Statement. The large police force deployed around Parliament has not prevented activists close to the senators of the radical opposition from invading the Senate and ransacking everything in their path...

Opposition senators, accompanied by particularly violent "militants", challenged President Cantave by demonstrating in the very precincts of Parliament. Clashes took place between the demonstrators and several senators...

Unidentified individuals wanting to prevent the ratification session dumped faeces on the entrance to the Senate Chamber and the entrance to the Diplomatic Lounge...

The Speaker of the Senate, Carl Murat Cantave, was assaulted in his office by individuals he qualified as "chimeras", who accompanied Senator Antonio Chéramy aka "Don Kato".

On the outside, Senator Ralph Féthiere's vehicle, was the target of several shots and was physically assaulted, to defend himself he fired on protesters causing 2 light wounded, a photojournalist and a parliamentary security officer.

Carl Cantave denounces the physical assaults he was subjected to and pointed at "Don Kato" and blamed the national police for failing to provide full security inside and outside the Parliament.

Reacting to these accusations, the spokesman of the police institution Michel-Ange Louis-Jeune said that the Police had done its work, recalling that the police had no authority to search the vehicle of a Senator or to oppose parliamentarians who allow certain individuals to accompany them to the precincts of Parliament.

Regarding a date for a next ratification meeting, Carl Cantave says no new meetings will be scheduled until Senator Senators' security is guaranteed and "chimeras" impose their law in the Senate.

Outside of Parliament, hundreds of highly motivated protestors protested violently against the holding of the ratification session. Windshields of cars were broken, shop windows were broken. It is reported that motorists were ransomed and that businesses and traders were vandalized and looted. The police used tear gas and rubber bullets several times to disperse protesters and thugs... Several arrests took place. No official record of the day has been released by the authorities concerned.
