Haiti - Reconstruction : Decisions and initiatives at the international forum of the PAPDA

The international forum organized by the Advocacy Platform for Alternative Development (Plateforme de Plaidoyer pour un Développement Alternatif PAPDA) under the theme "What funding to rebuild what ?" ended after three days of debate which involved hundreds of representatives of social organizations of Haiti. Were present, among others : Networks such as Jubilee South, the Assembly of Caribbean People, the League of Political Economy of Latin America, the Petroleum Workers Union, the Federation of Independent Trade Unions and NGOs of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as academics and professionals Haitians and from the University of West Indies.

Forum helped to know, live, the situation in Haiti, to support grassroots organizations, collect their proposals and to decide of new joint initiatives of support, like the formation of solidarity brigades.

Beverly Keene, of Jubilee South has indicated that during this meeting it was decided to campaign to not renew the mandate of the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC), considered as a parallel government set up a year ago under the tutelage of the United States, World Bank, the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) and other international donors. Forum participants called for a five-year moratorium on all trade agreements and neo-liberal investment, firmly rejecting any new debt in the name of the reconstruction. During the forum the emphasis was placed on strengthening the tasks of training, mobilization and coordination to build a participatory democracy capable of ending the impunity that favors the country's political leaders.

Moreover, peasant organizations, women, laborers, students, of human rights and business, have called to strengthening the actions for the withdrawal of occupation troops of the United Nations (MINUSTAH).

Finally, participants have examined the effects of the global crisis and the new partnership, which open to Haiti in particular with Latin America.
