Haiti - Cuba : 2nd Edition of the Haitian culture

The 2nd edition of Haitian culture will take place from August 8 to 11, in Ciego de Avila (capital of the province of the same name) located 430 km east of Havana (Cuba).

Ciego de Avila, is today distinguished from other Cuban provinces by the presence of several settlements of immigrants and descendants of Haiti and by various folk groups of songs and Haitian dances.

Sponsored by the Haitian Association, the University Máximo Gómez Báez and the Directorate of Culture of the Avilanian Territory, this event will be dedicated to the presentation of Juana Dollet aka "Bisnao" a Haitian descendant, considered the queen of Gagá, title she got as a Voodoo priestess in her community.

Silvia Álvarez, the Director of the Province of Haiti's Honorary Chair of Haitian Studies, said that she will analyze and exhibit at this meeting Bisnao's contribution to the rescue and preservation of the customs and traditions of her ancestors.

They will also be question at this event of Haitian migration in Ciego de Avila and its influence on local culture, as well as the preservation of habits in order to maintain this living legacy in the new generations.

Local groups like Famzetwal, Okay, La Gran Familia and Rumbavila, ardent advocates of Afro-Caribbean cultural traditions and roots, will also present at this event.

This second meeting of the Haitian culture, will end with a Gagá ceremony on Avileño Boulevard to Martí Park, where will be burned the effigy of the devil.
