Haiti - Social : Arranged marriages involving Haitians in the Bahamas

The Bahamian media The Nassau Guardian reveals by name, the involvement of several authorities in the Bahamas in the organization of fraudulent marriages involving Haitians in order to give them legal immigrant status... Revelations all the more worrying that the Archipelago sees since the beginning of the year see a significant increase of illegal Haitian migrants, fleeing Haiti, tempted to land clandestinely on the shores of the archipelago.

Although the newspaper The Nassau Guardian does not explicitly mention complicity at the level of the Embassy and consular service of Haiti in the Bahamas, one can easily deduce from the reading of a statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Haiti, that the justice of the Bahamas does not exclude the corruption and complicity in the Haitian diplomatic staff and that it has information in this sense, which it has probably shared with the Haitian Ministry.

Indeed, in a statement dated July 27, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Haiti indicates "A Commission of Inquiry will stay in the archipelago, from July 29 to August 3, 2019" stating "Once on site, this Commission will meet with the Bahamian authorities, diplomatic staff, local staff and community leaders to identify the culprits," pointing out that the guilty parties will be punished in accordance with Haitian laws.

To add to these converging clues, a statement dated July 28 from Herns Mesamours, Counselor and Head of the Consular Section at the Embassy of the Republic of Haiti in the Bahamas writes "[...] I want to assure you that you do not have not to worry. I am not concerned by any scandal at the level of the Embassy of the Republic of Haiti in the Bahamas [...] by respect for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that I represent at the level of the jurisdiction, I will not do no statement in the press or comment on social networks [...]"
