Haiti - Ounaminthe : New health center for pregnant women

Dr. Jean Denis Pierre, Director Departmental Sanitary Northeast after receiving modern equipment for the Public Health Center of Ouanaminthe, said there was no more reason for a pregnant woman crosses the border to Ouanaminthe, to give birth in the Dominican Republic, noting that the Ouanaminthe Medical Center in terms of service and facilities was equal to a Community Reference Hospital (UNHCR).

More than 100 million US dollars are spent each year by the Dominican Government https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21014-haiti-dr-more-than-5-billion-pesos-for-the-delivery-of-women-from-haiti.html for Haitian women who come to give birth in the Dominican Republic revealed Dr. Nelson Rodriguez Monegros, Director of Information of the National Health Service (SNS), which makes it a real problem binational.

Haitian women living in border areas preferring to go to the Dominican Republic because care is not available in Haiti https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-23660-icihaiti-healththe-insufficiency-of-medical-services-pushes-the-pregnant-haitian-in-dr.html In addition, they argue that it costs less to go to the Dominican Republic illegally than to pay for services in Haiti, where most health facilities are privately owned. in the Dominican Republic it does not cost them anything...

In 2018, according to hospital records, the SNS reveals that in the capital Santo Domingo, the percentage of Haitian births is around 25%; in hospitals in Santiago, between 30 and 35% and reaches 70 to 80% in Dominican health centers near the border.

With the Center in Ouanaminthe, the Haitian authorities hope to reduce the number of cases of pregnant women giving birth across the border.
