Haiti - Jacmel : Remarks of Mgr Launay Saturné

"The new Government should constitute a starting point for a new Haiti" according to Mgr Launay Saturné [Bishop of South-East], stressing that the country, since very long time, is faced with different problems that do not allow people to live decently. "The Haitian people today need a government capable of solving the urgent problems of the country [...] The next government should have priorities in order to revive the country [...] the first priority is that of the Church who must commit to helping people to change their mentality. Then he returned to the new Government to invest in vocational training for young people across the country; enable people to have access to quality education; solve the problem of impunity that plagues the Haitian judicial system; improve road infrastructure that prevents people who live in communal sections, to enjoy the same services as those living in urban areas."

Concerning the protest movements that prevail in some regions of the country since the publication of results of last elections, the bishop of South-East has launched an appeal for calm to the population. According to Mgr Saturné "Disorder and violence are not good for Haiti [...] The Provisional Electoral Council should be an honest and credible institution. If this were the case, the Haitian people would not have lost confidence in the electoral advisers and in results published by this institution."
