Haiti - Politic : The Club of Madrid in Haiti for four days

The fourth mission of the Project "Global Leadership for the reconstruction of Haiti" an initiative of the Club of Madrid, financed by the European Union, is arrived yesterday and will remain in Haiti until Friday to try to support the Haitian leaders "in the development of an effective democracy."

The delegation, headed by former Presidents Luis Lacalle (Uruguay) and Jorge Quiroga (Bolivia), will meet this week with the newly elected President Michel Martelly, and René Préval [outgoing President], elected parliamentarians and Member of the International Community.

After having wished "great success" to the elected President of Haiti, the Club of Madrid called yesterday, political parties and institutions to follow the procedures established by the Constitution and electoral law to resolve "peacefully" the different electoral. After the publication on April 20 of the final results of disputed elections. Stressing that the publication of these results have raised "doubts about the legitimacy of the process [...] the formation of a parliament resulting from results of legitimate elections is fundamental for the development of country."

The organization stressed that the recent reforms in the functioning of the Interim Haiti Recovery Commission (IHRC), promoted by the current Prime Minister Jean Max Bellerive aimed to "put between the hands of the Haitians, the future of their own country."
