Haiti - Social : 40 Haitian boat people intercepted near Cuba
On Saturday, the crew of the Royal Netherlands Navy vessel HNLMS Groningen intercepted a 35-foot (10.5 m) boat about 21km northeast of Punta Maisi (Cuba) with 49 Haitians (39 men, 10 women) on board including 3 unaccompanied children.
The Tampa ship, from the US Coast Guard, then intervened to help and take care of the migrants because of security issues with their boat.
In a statement, Major Michael Vega said that all the people on board would be sent back to Haiti, underlining that the Coast Guard was continuing to make targeted and coordinated efforts with several agencies to prevent any dangerous and illegal immigration attempts. US maritime, recalling that since January 1, 2019, the US Coast Guard had already intercepted more than 2,900 migrants fleeing Haiti, who tried to enter the United States illegally.
