Haiti - Elections : The United Nations and donors are skeptical about the results...

The United Nations and major donors supporting the electoral process in Haiti, in a joint statement expressing serious doubts over the transparency and legitimacy of the process that led to the publication of final results of parliamentary elections.

Joint Statement :

"The United Nations, on behalf of itself and Haiti's major election donors including Brazil, Canada, the EU, France, Spain and the United States, takes note of the publication of the final results announced on 20 April by the Conseil Electoral Provisoire (CEP) for the presidential and legislative elections.

We would like to express our warmest congratulations to President-elect Michel Joseph Martelly on his victory. We wish Mr. Martelly great success in the accomplishment of his mandate, which is crucial for the future of Haiti. We look forward to working closely with his new Administration, which will take office on 14 May.

We also take note that the results of the legislative elections overturn the results of 17 races in the Chamber of Deputies and 1 result in the Senate, all with the exception of two in favor of the incumbent party. The preliminary results published on 4 April appeared to reflect election-day accounts by Haitian and international observers that cases of irregularities and fraud on 20 March were isolated and reduced. Observers also confirmed that meticulous work was carried out by the Vote Tabulation Centre in addressing fraud and irregularities identified in the tally sheets. The final results have therefore raised serious concern about the transparency and legitimacy of the process leading to their publication.

We continue to stand with the people of Haiti in support of their right to choose their political leaders through free and fair elections at all levels. We urge all political actors and their supporters to remain calm and to work through peaceful means to address this issue."
