Haiti - Elections : The European Union congratulates Michel Martelly for his victory

Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, after the announcement of final results of the second round of presidential and legislative elections in Haiti declared :

"I welcome the publication by the Provisional Electoral Council of final results for the second round of parliamentary and presidential elections in Haiti. I congratulate Mr. Joseph Michel Martelly for his election as President of the Republic of Haiti and all the parliamentarians elected to serve on the Senate and Chamber of Deputies. The success of this electoral process is an important step in the current phase of democratic transition of country, which should lead to greater political stability and and improvement of the governance in the interests

of all the people of Haiti. The rapid establishment of the new Haitian authorities who have just been nominated democratically by the people of Haiti is now an essential requirement to accelerate the process of reconstruction and economic recovery of Haiti. The European Union will continue to support Haiti in its efforts to promote democracy, rule of law and development."
