Haiti - Great South : Jacmel wins the 6th edition of the regional debate tournament

Jérémie, Les Cayes, Camp-Perrin, Jacmel, Darbonne and Santo are the 6 Clubs that participated in the 6th Edition of the Greater South Regional Tournament, organized by the Youth Initiative program of the Knowledge and Freedom Foundation (FOKAL).

This is the Jacmel Club composed of debaters : Kesly Dade, Marie Sandy Benoit and Wendy Colas (trained by Réginald Raymond-Fils and Gerdy Nahomie Gabriel) who won the tournament by winning all the matchs he has played during this competition, which took place at Eco Hotel des Orangers.

Like the Western Regional Tournament, the Great South Tournament was organized around three motions, two of which were communicated to the clubs two months before the competition. The surprise motion was announced on the first day of the tournament. It was debated the next day.

The first motion was for Rounds 1 and 2. It was entitled "This House proposes that any defendant who has spent a year in prolonged pretrial detention must be automatically released."

"This House believes that we should ban the trade of skin whitening products throughout the country," was the statement of the surprise motion discussed in round 3.

The third motion "This House would require social networks to pay copyright to users who publish on their trading platforms" was debated in rounds 4 and 5.

There were five rounds of three matchs in total. The clubs played against each other. There was no semifinal or final. The champion club was the one who won the most matchs.

The Club of Santo composed of Désiré Mells, Geny-Love PASCAL, Rhaude Lyncée CHARLES (trained by Djim Guerrier) is vice-champion by winning four of his five matches.

As a result, Jacmel and Santo are qualified for the finals of the national tournament joining Côte-Plage and BMC qualified at the Western Regional Tournament.

These regional competitions, in addition to the local tournaments organized by the clubs themselves, constitute the elimination phase, directly qualifying the 2 finalists of each regional event (Great Sud and West) for the final phase of the national tournament which will take place next July.

Unlike previous regional tournaments, this edition was marked by a strong female presence. Out of a total of 18 debaters, 13 were female. A great first. Meïka Decime of the team of Les Cayes was named the best debater of the competition. She has been rewarded for her immense talent as a debater.
