Haiti - Economy : Textile unions announce several demonstrations on May 1

Textile workers' subcontracting unions announced peaceful demonstrations in Ouanaminthe, Cap-Haitien and Port-au-Prince on 1 May to demand a base salary of 1,000 gourdes and the reinstatement of workers dismissed illegally according to trade unions.

In addition, this week several hundred workers of the Industrial Development Company (CODEVI) located in Ounaminthe (North-East Department) have protested to denounce the unfair increase of the monthly levies on their salary by the General Direction of Taxes (DGI).

Trade unionists explained that an amount of 2,500 gourdes would have been levied by the DGI which would represent according to them, more than 30% of an average salary, without however specify the distribution of these levies...

Recall that at CODEVI, the workers have always been resistant to the levies of the DGI, arguing that in exchange for their taxes they did not receive services from the State. In March 2017 more than 3,000 workers had protested hhttps://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-20270-haiti-codevi-workers-refuse-to-pay-a-tax-to-dgi.html to try to force the DGI to reconsider its decision to levy on their salary 13% of taxes (10% of taxes, 1% for the contribution to the management and development fund of local authorities, 1% for the Social Assistance Fund) and 1% for the emergency fund).

In any event, the workers plan to join the demonstrations on May Day, calling for the end of these withdrawals, which they call unjust and unjustified.
