Haiti - Epidemic : The fight against cholera, depends on international partners 15/04/2011 14:52:20
The general downward trend of the cholera epidemic observed since the beginning of the year, continued in March. However, the impact of the progressive withdrawal of NGOs could be important, if local authorities are not able to a resurgence of new cases during the rainy season. The management of the cholera epidemic was and remains largely dependent on the support of international medical organizations, said the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
In support of the MSPP, NGOs have ensured the establishment of Treatment Centers of Cholera and Cholera Treatment Units (CTC/UTC), the supply of medical equipment, the training of local medical staff and payment of salaries and the case management. They also provided advice and ensured a supervision, improved health conditions, the water supply of health facilities, epidemiological surveillance and the promotion of health and hygiene at the community level. (1) Cuban Medical Brigades (BMC) were the first organization to support the MSPP in the fight against cholera. They treated a high percentage of cases of cholera and diarrhea during the peak of the epidemic, through a network of 23 CTC and 47 CTU. About 52 brigades are currently deployed on the ground. Their goal is to investigate and, if necessary, to treat cases in areas of difficult access.
