Haiti - Social : 40 Haitian boat-people intercepted in the Bahamas

On Tuesday, following reports, the HMBS Durward Knowle of the Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF) under the command of Lieutenant Bertram Bowleg intercepted a 35-foot Haitian sailboat on the South coast of Little Inagua Island in the archipelago of the Bahamas.

The search of the island and its surroundings by members of the RBDF allowed to find and arrest 40 illegal Haitian migrants (34 men and 6 women) in irregular migratory situation.

The Haitians, all of whom appeared to be in good health, were taken aboard a Defense Force boat and taken to Matthew Town on Great Inagua Island where they were handed over to the immigration authorities for investigation and ulterior treatment.

With these 40 new migrants, more than 300 illegal Haitians have been apprehended since the beginning of this year by the RBDF.

Recall that nearly 70,000 immigrants (18% of the population of the Bahamas) live in the archipelagos of the Bahamas, most of them in an irregular situation, including at least 50,000 Haitians, according to the information available.
