Haiti - Tornado : Sunrise Airways offers its aid to Cuba

The powerful tornado that suddenly formed on January 27th at 8:21 pm and hit Central-South Havana (Cuban capital) for 16 minutes with winds of 300 km/h over a distance of 11.5 km (source: Institute of Meteorology of Cuba (Insmet)), has left a heavy toll: at least 4 dead, 195 wounded, many of them in serious condition, damaging 1,238 homes and destroying 124 totally (according to the Cuban Government). The damage are considerable, besides the houses, it is necessary adding the partial or total landslides as well as damage to infrastructure and sectors of the national economy, said Juan Montalvo, Vice President of the Council of Public Administration of Havana.

Philippe Bayard, President and CEO of the Haitian airline Sunrise Airways, in a letter to the Cuban embassy in Haiti sent a message of sympathy to the Cuban people.

"On behalf of all of Sunrise, we show our support and stand in solidarity with all those who have lost goods they have acquired with so much effort [...] We know the country's ability to plan and to face to events, but this kind of natural hazard was not predictable, unlike other meteorological phenomena."

Bayard adds that it makes available to the Cuban authorities the transport possibilities of his airline to transport to Cuba from Haiti, all the necessary assistance.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said Tuesday on his Twitter account that Habane will recover from the severe damage caused by the tornado, thanks to the collective effort.
