Haiti - Social : Another tragedy of the sea avoided

After the interception and the repatriation of 91 boat people on March 22, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Spencer (USCGC Spencer WMEC-905) have repatriated yesterday Tuesday, 58 Haitian migrants to Cap Haitien. A repatriation which is added to an already long list of our compatriots who fled poverty and insecurity, risking their lives in flimsy boats, exploited by unscrupulous traffickers.

Saturday, the crew of the Spencer located a 30-foot sailing vessel approximately 30 miles east of Punta Maisi, Cuba. Once on scene, the crew discovered that while only a few people were visible on deck, dozens more were crammed below decks.

A total of 58 Haitian migrants were safely transferred to the Spencer, and have received food, water, shelter and basic medical attention.

"We're thankful we were able to locate and stop this voyage before it became a tragedy," said Capt. Peter Brown, adding that "Coast Guard migrant patrols save lives by removing migrants from these unsafe situations, as well as protect our nation's borders by deterring dangerous and illegal activity."
