Haiti - Social : International Day for the Elimination of Gender Violence

As part of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and Girls (this Sunday, November 25), the United Nations family in Haiti will accompany the Ministry of Women's Affairs in the 16-day launch activities against gender violence.

This period will be marked by a program with more than twenty activities (awareness workshops, artistic projects, discussions with young leaders, sports activities, family planning and prevention of diseases such as AIDS), will also invite to the reflection on the role of women as key actors in sustainable development.

"[...] violence against women and girls is a global pandemic with far-reaching consequences for families and society. It constitutes a moral affront to all, a sign of shame in all societies and a major obstacle to inclusive, equitable and sustainable development [...] the fight against impunity for crimes against women and girls, and the empowerment and realization of the rights of women and girls are imperatives to achieve all 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 and the goal of Haiti to become an emerging country on the horizon 2030. It is the responsibility of everyone," said Mamadou Diallo, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General, United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Haiti.

The calendar of the 16 days of activities will take place around 5 key days:

  • 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women);

  • 1 December (World AIDS Day);

  • 3 December (International Day of People with Disabilities);

  • 5 December (International Volunteer Day);

  • December 10 (World Human Rights Day) also the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The global theme of this year's campaign is "Orange the World : Hear Me Too" which is why the orange color will once again be the symbol that will dress United Nations events and buildings around the world and in Haiti, to reaffirm their support for advancing gender equality as an indispensable element of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
