Haiti - Social : The number of undernourished people falls in Haiti

According to a new report on food and nutrition security 2018 of the United Nations Food Fund (FAO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), UNICEF and the World Food Program (WFP), for the third year in a row, the number of people suffering from hunger is increasing.

39.3 million people, or 6.1% of the regional population (Latin America and the Caribbean) suffer from hunger. Between 2015 and 2016, there were 200,000 more undernourished people. Between 2016 and 2017, there were 400,000 more indicating that the situation is getting worse very quickly.

Since 2014, Argentina, Bolivia and Venezuela have seen their number of undernourished citizens increase. Venezuela is today one of the countries with the largest number of undernourished people in the region (3.7 million, or 11.7% of its population), with Haiti (5 million, 45.7% of its population) https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-18034-icihaiti-health-130-000-children-suffering-from-acute-malnutrition-in-haiti.html and Mexico. (4.8 million, 3.8% of its population).

However, the report notes that in Haiti hunger has declined over the last 3 years , as well as in Mexico, Colombia and the Dominican Republic. The only four countries to achieve a reduction since 2014.

On the other hand, the number of undernourished people remains unchanged in 11 countries : Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay and Peru.

In addition, Brazil, Cuba and Uruguay are the three countries in the region where the percentage of people suffering from hunger is less than 2.5% of their population.

The report reveals that economic and social inequalities are synonymous with chronic malnutrition among children living especially in rural areas. In Belize, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Suriname, chronic child malnutrition rates in rural areas also exceed of 50% observed rates in urban areas.
