Haiti - Justice : Prisoners have rights

As part of the International Day of Detainees, the South Departmental Directorate of the Office of Citizen Protection (OPC) organized a talk at the Prison of Les Cayes, on "the internal regulations of penitentiary institutions" with 19 detainees, at a rate of one inmate per cell.

The purpose of this talk was to sensitize detainees about their rights and duties, in order to become committed and responsible citizens.

At the end of this session, the inmates learned that they have :

1) Right to defense and legal assistance;

2) Right of access to the outdoors and to sport;

3) Right to maintain family ties;

4) Right to send and receive letters and parcels;

5) Right to social reintegration and vocational training.

Satisfied with this activity, the inmates thanked the OPC and promised to share the knowledge gained with the other detainees.
