Haiti - Agriculture : $76.8M to improve the lives of small Haitian farmers 27/10/2018 09:45:00
Thursday at the Montana Hotel, Jobert C. Angrand, the Minister of Agriculture and Jean Marie Robert Chery, the Coordinator of the Technological Innovation Program in Agriculture and Agroforestry (PITAG), proceeded to the opening of a 2-days workshop and the launch of the PITAG field activities announced last August. In total PITAG will invest 76.8 million US dollars over 5 years in 30 communes of the country, to improve the lives of small Haitian farmers. Particularly disadvantaged groups, such as women and youth, will be targeted and more than 65,000 households should benefit. To meet these challenges, the Program will provide Haitian smallholders with agricultural technologies and practices that are well adapted to local conditions. Thus, the combination of fruit tree and vegetable crops will provide better harvests and feed more people. The Program takes a people-centered approach and emphasizes community participation. New technologies and practices will be put in place through farm schools. After their training, small farmers will get inputs and support to put into practice the innovations they have been taught. PITAG is financed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to the tune of 55 million, the Global Program for Agriculture and Food Security (GAFSP) to the tune of 10 million and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) up to 10 million. The contribution of the Haitian State is around $1 million. See also : SL/ HaitiLibre
