Haiti - Reconstruction : Launch of construction of a HQ for Haitian unions

Four representatives of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE - SCFP in french) and a representative of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC - AFPC in french) are currently on site in Haiti to launch the construction of a new building for Haitian unions. They are also accompanied by Denis Malo of the firm Courbec, specializing in management and property development. The former headquarters of the Confederation of Workers of Public and Private Sectors (CTSP) was destroyed in the earthquake of 2010. Since then, the Haitian unions operate under a tent of 10 by 12 feet.

This construction is made possible thanks to contributions of CUPE and the PSAC, but also of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU - UIES in french), the Union of Public Service in Quebec (SFPQ) and the Alliance of Professional and Technical Staff of the Health and Human Services (APTS).

"We are here to launch the new building for the unions" said Claude Généreux, National Secretary-Treasurer of SCFP "We even attended to the cleanup of the land where the new building OF the CTSP Will be built." The delegation also met with the Haitian engineer involved in the reconstruction project. The cost of the reconstruction project valued at nearly $100,000.

We are gone further, by providing training to 15 Union leaders, including on the Union financial management. While the international aid does not always have the desired effect, this collaboration interunion, represents our effort in the reconstruction not only of the infrastructure but also of the capacity of unions and to the Haitian civil society."

Dukens Raphael, President of the Confederation of Workers of Public and Private Sectors (CTSP), which has 6,000 members of twelve different unions, is grateful of the contribution of SCFP, the ACFP and other Canadian unions: "It is with many satisfaction and solidarity that we receive this support, from the Canadian unionists and we are extremely pleased that this support enter in its execution phase"
