Haiti - Elections : Democracy by force of arms ? 21/03/2011 10:35:22
"Democracy has triumphed, is the lesson of the day" affirmed Gaillot Dorsinvil, the President of the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) during an assessment press conference Sunday, welcoming the successful holding of the elections throughout the country despite irregularities and isolated violences which resulted to 3 dead and several wounded. If the presidential election, without being without criticism has been non-violent, the parliamentary elections were responsible for this sad assessment and in each of this unfortunate incidents, the party in power INITE was involved... A party whose acts of violence during the first round are still in our memories... Gary Desrosiers, Deputy Spokesman of the National Police, has confirmed the assessment of the incidents that occurred primarily in the Artibonite (North) and the North West and presented an overview of the various interventions of the PNH during the day on Sunday : In Mare Rouge (North West) where barricades of burning tires had been erected, two people were killed and several others injured by gunfire in clashes between supporters of candidates Eloune Doréus (Altrenative) and Yves Duprat (INITE). In Saut-d’Eau, in the Central Plateau unidentified individuals, traveling in a vehicle belonging to the former deputy Romuald Smith (INITE), pened fire on voters, forcing the temporary suspension of the electoral process. No injuries were fortunately reported. In Prien, 5th communal section of Marchand-Dessalines, in the northern Artibonite a shootout between armed supporters of Gracia Delva (Lavni) and Woodly Simon (INITE) has made one dead and several wounded who were rushed to the hospital.
