Haiti - Economy : Inflation passes the bar of 14%

For the month of August 2018, the General Consumer Price Index (base 100 in August 2004) stood at 359.9 against 349.5 in July, showing an increase in inflation in a very slight slowdown of + 1.4% in a monthly rate, compared to 1.5% the previous month https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-25362-haiti-economy-monthly-inflation-accelerates-+-15-in-july.html . Year on year (last 12 months) inflation was up to 14.1% against 13.6% the previous month.

This monthly increase of + 1.4% is mainly the result of the behavior of the consumption indices : "Food, beverages and tobacco" (+ 1.5%), "Clothing and fabrics, shoes" (+ 1.5%), "Equipments and maintenance of equipment". housing "(+ 1.4%) and" Health "(+ 1.4%).

The upward change in the "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" index, which represents more than 50% of the household budget, comes from, among other things, the increase in rice prices (+ 1.8%), average meat (+ 2.4%) , chicken (+ 1.8%), ham (+ 1.2%), fresh fish (+ 1.6%), herring (+ 2.5%), salt herring (+ 1.5%), cod (+ 1.4%), peanut butter (+ 1.7%), coconut (+ 2.1%), giraumon (+ 1.6%), leek (+ 1.9%), cabbage (+ 1.3%), onion (+ 1.4%), garlic (+ 1.1%), tomato (+ 1.5%), malanga (+ 2.2%), cassava (+ 1.6%) and potato (+ 1.9%).

The rise in the "Clothing and Fabrics, Footwear" index comes from the variation in product prices such as: fabrics (+ 2.1%), suits, universal jackets (+ 1.5%), Men's T-shirts (+ 1.3%) ), the men's trousers (+ 2.2%), the t-shirt (+ 1.6%), the underpants (+ 2.1%), the dress (+ 2.2%) and the clothing industry (+ 1.3%).

The increase in the "Equipment and Home Maintenance" index comes mainly from the rise in living room furniture (+ 1.4%), the dining room (+ 1.5%), the bed (+ 1.3%), the mattress (+ 1.7%), groundwater (+ 1.4%), towels (+ 1.5%), insecticide (+ 2.0%) and disinfectant (+ 3.1%).

Finally, the increase in the "Health" index is attributable to the increase in drug prices (+ 1.8%) and fees paid to doctors (+ 1.5%).
