Haiti - Health : Nearly 20 people die every day of HIV/AIDS in Haiti

The 6th Mortality, Morbidity and Service Utilization Survey (EMMUS-VI) conducted by the Haitian Institute of Childhood in collaboration with the Haitian Institute of Statistics and Informatics, sponsored by the Ministry of Public Health with the technical assistance from the World Demographic and Health Survey indicates that the Artibonite Department has the highest number of HIV cases followed by the Southeast and North departments, while the Center has the fewest infected.

The survey reveals that HIV prevalence is lower among women in urban areas, as opposed to men. Similarly, the study points out that the educational level of the population is a determining factor in the spread of the AIDS virus.

Some figures on the prevalence of HIV in Haiti : (investigation accompanied by screening tests)

  • among young people aged 15-24 is 1.1% among women and 0.9% of men are HIV-positive ;

  • In Haiti, 2.0% of women and men aged 15-49 are HIV-positive: 2.3% of women and 1.6% of men. The percentage of HIV-positive women increases with age. Very low at less than 20 years (0.3%), seroprevalence reaches a maximum of 4.5% at 45-49 years. In men, the variations are irregular but the general trend is an increase with age, from 0.5% for those under 20 to a maximum of 3.5% at 50-54 years, and then a decrease. ;

  • In urban and rural areas HIV prevalence is the same (2%) ;

  • HIV prevalence is much higher among women who have broken union, especially widows (14.1%), than women in union (2.6%) and single women (0.7%) ;

  • In almost all couples, both spouses are seronegative (97%) ;

Overall, HIV prevalence among women and men aged 15-49 increased from 2.2 per cent in 2005-06 and 2012 to 2.0 per cent in 2016-17. For women, the prevalence would have increased from 2005-2006 to 2012 (from 2.3% to 2.7%), then decreased to the level of 2005-2006 (2.3%). For men, the prevalence would have decreased between the three surveys, from 2.0% to 1.6%. However none of these differences is statistically significant, specifies the EMMUS-VI survey.
