Haiti - Politic : The UN prevents DR of consequences of massive expulsions of Haitians

Tuesday, Sonia Vásquez, the National Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFAP), said the massive expulsion of Haitians who have not been registered or accepted in the National Plan for the Regularization of Foreigners (PNRE) who ended on August 26th, could have negative economic consequences for the sectors in which they work and recommends to the Dominican government to evaluate what it will do with these people declaring "Expulsion is an immediate measure, but the deportation completely solves the problem of the undocumented in the Dominican Republic, should ask the Dominican State."

Vásquez reminded that evictions are under the government's powers, but that beyond the Dominican Republic uses a Haitian workforce (about 5%, source CEPALC 2017) in several areas (construction, agriculture and tourism among others...)

She recognizes that the PNRE has achieved its goal, but that it had limits, because on the one hand, very many Haitians had problems with Haiti, failing to obtain the required documents and all other Haitians in an irregular migratory situation on the Dominican territory did not register within the deadlines granted by the Dominican authorities for various reasons.

It should be noted that since the closure of the PNRE, the Dominican government has shown no sign of a massive repatriation program.
