Haiti - DR : Haitian cane cutters demand an extension of PNRE

Last week dozens of "Cañeros" (sugar cane workers) of Haitian origin, members of the National Union of Cane Cutters, who could not qualify in the National Plan of Regularization of Foreigners (PNRE), which ended on Sunday, August 26, 2018, for lack of documents promised by the Government of Haiti and never delivered, demonstrated in front of the Ministry of the Interior and the Police (MIP) demanding that be extended the period of renewal of temporary stay and change of status (temporary residence).

Trade Unionist Jesus Nunez spokesman for the "Cañeros" and Coordinator of the Sugarcane Workers' Union in the bateyes said the protest was peaceful in nature and handed to the MIP a document with their requests.

Migration officers in charge of the PNRE reported that from August 26, 2017 to date, 202,891 requests were received via 16 offices throughout the Dominican Republic, for applications for temporary residence permit renewal or change of residence. migratory category (temporary residence).

Note that at the end of this program only 2.8% of foreigners (all nationalities combined) obtained the status of temporary residence entitling them to a Dominican cedula.
