Haiti - FLASH : DPC and CODAMAR deny rumors of earthquake and tsunami

Irresponsible individuals with unknown motives broadcast a video and alarmist and fake messages, relayed by social media, messaging platforms and by word of mouth, reporting a magnitude 7.3 earthquake recorded in Haiti and which should cause a tsunami, especially in Port-au-Prince.

The Directorate of Civil Protection (DPC) of the Ministry of the Interior and the Maritime Data Observation and Operations Center (CODOMAR) of the Maritime Service of Haiti, formally deny the rumors that the coast of the country should be hit by a tsunami on Friday...

The DPC and the CODOMAR inform the public that the video published goes back to the earthquake of January 12, 2010 and does not correspond to the reality of today contrary to what the published information suggests. "No earthquakes of this magnitude have been recorded in either Haiti or the region in recent hours" say the two State authorities.

The DPC and the CODOMAR call on the population to remain calm and vigilant and not to rely on such information or rumors, intended to serve unacknowledged purposes and from unofficial or credible sources.
