Haiti - FLASH : Modern slavery, Venezuela and Haiti first tie

Thursday, in a report presented to the United Nations by the Walk Free Foundation an organization founded by the Australian mining magnate Andrew Forrest to fight against modern slavery, Venezuela and Haiti are ranked at the top of 27 countries in the Americas zone in term of slavery.

In addition, Walk Free also estimates the risk of slavery by country, which in the case of the Americas zone ranks Haiti first followed by Venezuela and Mexico. For Haiti and Venezuela, government problems are the main risk factors.

This report, prepared with the 2016 data, defines modern slavery as any operating situation that a person can not abandon because of threats, violence, coercion, abuse of power or deception. The Global Slavery Index uses state-of-the-art research to estimate the prevalence of modern slavery country by country in more than 160 countries.

TOP 5 of modern slavery Zone America (27 countries) :

1 - Venezuela: 5.6 victims per 1,000 inhabitants (174,000 victims out of a population estimated at 31.1 million)

2 - Haiti: 5.6 victims per 1,000 inhabitants (59,000 victims in an estimated population of 10.7 million)

3 - Dominican Republic: 4 victims per 1,000 inhabitants (42,000 victims in an estimated population of 10.5 million)

4 - Cuba: 3.8 victims per 1,000 inhabitants (43,000 victims out of a population estimated at 11.4 million)

5 - Honduras: 3.4 victims per 1,000 inhabitants (30,000 victims in an estimated population of 8.9 million)

23rd USA 1.3 victims per 1,000 inhabitants (403,000 victims out of a population estimated at 319.9 million)

27th Canada 0.5 per 1,000 victims (17,000 victims in an estimated population of 35.9 million)

In total, the report estimates that nearly 2 million people in the region of the Americas were in a situation of slavery in 2016.
