Haiti - Fuels : The IMF suggests a much more gradual approach to remove subsidies

Thursday, following the 3 days of riots caused by the Government's attempt to significantly increase the price of fuel at the pump https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24881-haiti-flash-the-price-of-gas-explodes-at-the-pump.html followed a few hours later by a hasty retreat of the Head of State https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24889-haiti-flash-the-government-suspend-its-decision.html face the deadly violence across the country, Gerry Rice, spokesman for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) suggested in a press conference to the Haitian authorities to act more gradually in removing subsidies for fuels.

"We will continue to support Haiti and help the authorities develop a revised reform strategy," Rice said, adding that the strategy could include "a much more progressive approach to removing [fuel] subsidies," noting that this elimination of subsidies should enable the Haitian Government to release funds to finance social measures in Haiti for the most disadvantaged populations.
