Haiti - Elections : The election promises to be calm, according to UNPOL...

At 11 days before the second round of elections, Marc Tardif, the Head of the UN Police (UNPOL) in Haiti, said that the election promises to be calm... "I don't see any major risk for this second round. Clearly it's going to be a tense period but I don’t think we will have big trouble. We have a good working relationship with the national police and our robust presence will deter anybody wanting to create problems", has explained the Chief of Police. "During the first round of the presidential election, we were present to support the PNH. We had a joint plan that has been implemented. There were few incidents, but compared to previous elections, this first round was rather quiet. We will nevertheless strengthen our positions in areas that were a little unstable in the first round", he added.

To limit the influence of criminal groups and gangs, the UN Police with the military and the haitian police officers performs joint operations "surgical" to stop gang leaders or former prisoners escaped after the earthquake of January 12, 2010.

"Following the earthquake, everyone has been destabilized including the criminal organizations. At least 4.500 prisoners have escaped and 500 were recaptured. In difficult neighborhoods where the territories are administered by gang leaders like Cité Soleil, we do two or three times a week, joint operations with the military and Haitian police officers. These are surgical operations based on intelligence and information provided by the PNH that should not be be underestimated. In terms of information the PNH is very advanced", he stressed.

If we describes the outbreak of violence across the country, the destruction of goods, the injured and dead, within the 3 days that followed the publication of the preliminary results of the first round as "few incidents..." and "a bit of instability" we can understand the remarks of the UNPOL. However, we can not share this optimism, out of touch, which proceeds to the usual misinformation of the Minustah and its components.
