Haiti - Humanitarian : The UN calls on the international community to increase its support for Haiti

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock concluded his two-day mission to Haiti. During his visit, Lowcock traveled to the Northeast where he visited the Departmental Emergency Operations Center (COUD) of the Civil Protection and the Border Resources Center established by the United Nations Migration Agency (IOM) to help Haitians in an irregular migratory situation in the neighboring territory, in their return to Haiti.

On Wednesday, Mark Lowcock during his meeting with President Jovenel Moïse, launched a new appeal to the international community to increase its support for the efforts deployed by the Haitian Government in the preparation of emergencies, as well as in the current response to food insecurity and cholera to ensure better protection for the most vulnerable.

Let's recall that last January, the Haitian government and the humanitarian community, had launched a call for funds of 252 million dollars (Response Plan 2018) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-23251-haiti-social-appeal-for-funds-of-$252m-from-international-donors.html to meet the urgent humanitarian needs for the year 2018, an appeal that has so far obtained a timid response from the international community. It should be noted that only 37% of the necessary funds had been collected during the call for funds for the year 2017.

The Under-Secretary-General also advocated for longer-term development efforts to address the underlying drivers of humanitarian needs so that Haitians affected by natural disasters can cope, recover and adapt better. .

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than half of the Haitian population lives in extreme poverty and 1.3 million people need food assistance.
