Haiti - FLASH : Extreme Heat Alert

The Ministry of the Environment draws the attention of the population to the overwhelming heat that is currently affecting Haiti, including the last measure taken on June 15 by the Port-au-Prince City Council to change its schedule because of the heat https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24689-haiti-flash-rising-temperature-the-town-hall-of-port-au-prince-closes.html reminds us of the effect of global warming, whose impact threatens Haiti's development process.

Indeed the Technical Services of the Ministries have noted in recent days in Port-au-Prince, an average temperature 29.5 ° C and a relative humidity of 82% or a heat index or wind chill of 36.6 ° C, an index of thermal comfort unbearable by the population. Under such conditions and with prolonged exposure to the sun, the water sweated by the body evaporates less easily giving an increased sensation of heat. Faced with the risks of repetition of such days and crowds in public places during the broadcast of World Cup football games, the thermal discomfort will worsen and the risk of headaches, discomfort, muscle cramps and heats that can cause death by the aggravation of cardiovascular complications, can increase.

Also, the Ministry of the Environment informs the population in general and that of the cities in particular of the provisions in progress to set up, with the various actors of the sectors, of vital sectors of the country, a system of climate watch, which will allow among others , to warn about any abnormal climate situation requiring urgent action. The Ministry notes that this system will be added to other tools it intends to make available to other sectors for more informed responses to climate change.
