Haiti - Chile : Investigation on the circulation of false documents for Haitian migrants

The Chilean Police (Policía De Investigaciones - PDI) has opened an investigation into the alleged existence of a gang of Haitian and Chilean counterfeiters who are engaged in manufacturing and falsifying Chilean immigration documents (visas, special work cards etc...) and who operate in the coastal province of Valparaíso.

The investigation was launched after the discovery of a false special work card for foreigners, on a Haitian citizen aged 36 entered Chile in September with a tourist visa. This false document contained anomalies (format and typography) and a registration number that was associated with another person (a Haitian man).

Sub-Prefect Jaime Álvarez, Head of the Local Economic Crimes Investigation Squad, suspects the existence of a gang of counterfeiters, other false and falsified documents found in the hands of Haitian migrants.

On the other hand, the Governor of the Province of Valparaiso, Sergio Salazar, gave the instructions to strengthen the controls of immigration documents in order to prevent this case from gaining momentum.

For his part, the Prosecutor ordered that the woman be released, but she will have to appear before the Public Prosecutor who will decide the legal consequences.
