Haiti - FLASH : More than 200,000 minor children work in the worst forms of work

As part of the activities to celebrate the National Day of the Haitian child, Joanito Jethro Thomas Dubois, the Protection Coordinator of the Terre des Hommes Foundation (TDH) recalled "Although Haiti has ratified the Convention 138 on Minimum Age for Child Labor since 2007 and Convention 182 on the Elimination of the Worst Forms of Child Labor, two international instruments that are essential to the protection of children forced to work. Nevertheless, nearly 400,000 children work as domestic servants, of which 204,000 in the worst forms of work (2014 study) https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-16846-icihaiti-social-over-200-000-domestic-slaves-under-15-years-in-the-country.html [...] These figures are proof that a lot of work remains to be done in Haiti."

For his part, Olin Saint Cyr, the representative of the Ministry of Social Affairs, emphasized "the child at work is everybody's business, a situation that constitutes a real obstacle to the education of children. Despite legal sanctions, child labor and child trafficking continue to remain unpunished. Without a real involvement of all the actors of the society, the respect of the rights children will remain a lure."

Note that the International Labor Office (ILO) recalls that the law defines the child as a person under the age of 18 and the concept of "child labor" encompasses all activities that deprive children of their childhood, their potential and their dignity and affect their schooling, health and physical and mental development.
