Haiti - Economy : New seizure of contraband goods in Haiti

On the night from June 7 to 8, a few kilometers from the Ganthier customs checkpoint (west of Port-au-Prince), a customs control brigade in collaboration with PoliFront border police officers seized a large amount of smuggled goods including several dozen sacks of maize, boxes of eggs, thousands of styrofoam items (import bans), crates of tomato sauce and other food products from the Dominican Republic.

Jan Jorel Janvier, the Director General of Customs, recalls that Lake Azuei serves as a transit route for contraband goods, stating that before this operation at least 8 boats delivered each night in Haiti products at the border crossing point. Stressing that the smugglers use young Haitians often minors paid 1,000 gourdes, to unload and transport the goods which are then loaded on trucks before supplying the markets in Haiti.

Jean Jorel Janvier, the Director General of the General Administration of Customs (AGD), while welcoming this victory against the smugglers acknowledged that he did not know until now who was behind this traffic of goods.

Seven young minors were arrested near the boats. Pierre Marie Du Meny, the Minister of Commerce warned that these young people would be handed over to justice for their actions, however, the police released them before leaving the lake ...
